The bathroom is the perfect environment to calm the mind. I think so many of us find peace behind the bathroom door with our daily escape—why not make the 40 minutes we spend in this space matter even more. Here are some tips to bring beauty to your bathroom environment; creating a place we start and end our day with a sense of calm.

Turn your bathroom into a natural oasis with green plants—low light plants can work well in a moisture-rich bathroom environment. I love the tried-and-true ZZ or Spider plants. Even the “air plant” which comes in numerous varieties can be a perfect solution in the bathroom shower.

Remove the blinds and flood the space with natural light. If you have a window that requires privacy, consider a privacy film that can be easily applied to the existing interior window glass. If you don’t have a window, consider painting the ceiling a blue-green color to reflect the sky overhead.

Don’t look at white painted walls—add a beautiful painting or sculpture to the bathroom that brings a smile every morning—the bathroom is often overlooked when it comes to art. If you are remodeling the bathroom, consider splurging on an interesting tile to create an accent or focal wall to draw interest.

Focus on your own live well needs, I love to begin with head-to-toe dry brushing daily. By exfoliating your skin with a dry brush, it increases blood flow and removes dead skin cells. Strong, upsweeping strokes of a drybrush can be a positive, anti-aging routine every morning.

Cleanse the body by soaking in a lukewarm bath of Epson salts with a couple of drops of Tangerine essential oil. This sweet citrus scent if naturally uplifting and creates a happy mindset for the day ahead. If you don’t have a soaking bath, instead create your own salt scrub mixture of Epson salt, Tangerine and Argan oils to naturally invigorate your skin in the shower.

Clear the clutter—I’m not only referring to endless products that crowd the vanity top, but also the sink cabinet. When have you last looked below the sink to see what is lurking in these cabinet depths? Dispose of old cleaning products properly and go back to the basics; try cleaning the bathroom top-to-bottom with some mild dish detergent and warm water in the bathroom sink.

Set a positive intention for yourself—look in the mirror and speak your intention to yourself. This is positive way to reinforce your affirmation morning and night.

Be content—just considering a couple of these things will have you going from mania to mindful every morning.
